Vol. 4 Issue 31 – Video: The power of English for development

 ELTWeekly Vol. 4 Issue#31 | July 30, 2012 | ISSN 0975-3036

The British Council team says, “For over 75 years the British Council has been helping people learn English.

Learning English isnt just about acquiring new skills: it can lead to better employment opportunities and salaries; plus it helps individuals take part in global conversations and connect with people from different cultures.

We believe that English – and support to teachers of English – also contributes to the wider development priorities in many countries and supports the UKs international development commitments to improve the lives of hundreds of millions of people. In India, for example, Project English has reached around 500,000 teachers and over 20 million young people.

To test our thinking, British Council CEO Martin Davidson led a discussion on English in Development with Government Representatives from Commonwealth countries, Non-Government Organisations, multilateral agencies, and participants from the UK media and policy makers.

Here, Martin outlines why we think English is important and participants in the round-table give us their views on the role of English in their countries”.
