The Cambridge ELT Blog contributor Jade Blue has published a new blog post ‘Introducing the Sustainability Framework for ELT: free activity cards’.
She says, “As teachers and educators we play an important role in helping our learners develop the skills they will need to flourish at work and as citizens. Sustainability can bring conversations of local and global interest into the classroom. It also helps learners engage with and benefit from their English language learning. It can provide opportunities for learners to develop the skills to live more sustainably, become responsible citizens, and play an active part in shaping their worlds. But what exactly are these skills, and how can we integrate them into our classroom practices?
What do we mean by ‘sustainability’?
There are many different definitions of sustainability. Research consistently shows that it’s important to recognise the interconnected nature of the environmental, social, and economic dimensions of sustainability.
- Environmental sustainability is about supporting the health and wellbeing of all forms of life by protecting global ecosystems and conserving natural resources.
- Social sustainability is about ensuring healthy and equitable communities for present and future generations.
- Economic sustainability is about ensuring that economic activity impacts positively on the social, environmental, and cultural aspects of local and global communities.”
