Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults or CELTA is a widely recognized teaching qualification, which is perfect for candidates that wish to get an English job abroad. It is awarded by Cambridge ESOL, the full-time course duration is four to five weeks, but it could be taken part time too and in that case, it lasts several weeks or even months. The courses are validated by University of Cambridge Local Examinations Syndicate (UCLES), but are run by various centers in great number of countries.

The certificate is most often provided to people that wish to become English teachers abroad, but are also good for candidates that complete the course and want to teach English in their own countries. The course itself covers five main areas: learners and teachers, language awareness and analysis, planning and resources for different contexts, and developing teaching skills. There is no final examination and the candidates are assessed by an external assessor throughout the course, where the written assignments and the teaching practices of each candidate are evaluated. Four written assignments have to be completed in total, focused on the English language system, language skills, classroom teaching, and adult learning. The teaching practice comprises of six hours of teaching.

The candidates are awarded Pass, Pass B, and Pass A grades and approximately 63% of all candidates pass the course successfully. Close to 300 centers in 54 countries offer the CELTA course and more than 10 000 people graduate annually. If you are considering enrolling, keep in mind that the full-time course is intense and will require determination and perseverance – for more information on the course, you can visit the Cambridge University ESOL examinations’ website, and also visit numerous site and forums that offer resources and information related to CELTA. You might want to consider purchasing a few self-study packs, or buy or borrow a few books from your local library.

Passing the course is likely to allow you to make the carrier change that you have wanted to make for a while or simply help you get a teaching position in a country that you wanted to visit and live in!
