ELTWeekly Issue#93 – 5 Must Have ELT Books (Under $15)

Hi everyone,

Last night I though of sharing something different in the latest issue of ELTWeekly.

I thought of digging out some videos, articles, teaching tips and finally chose to share details of a few must have ELT books. So this issue features the details of five books which are available for less than $15.

Book#1: Painless English for Speakers of Other Languages (Barron’s Painless Series) by Jeffrey Strausser

This book will be of special value to middle school students and high school students growing up in families where English is not the first language. Like other titles in Barron’s Painless series, the approach to learning is informal and user-friendly.

The authors take students step by step through all parts of speech–nouns, pronouns, verbs, modifiers, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. Next they offer advice for improving vocabulary, spelling, and American English pronunciation, emphasizing the importance of active listening, and learning vowel sounds and R sounds, and recognizing silent letters and homophones.

The book’s final three chapters concentrate on written English, advancing from correct punctuation and sentence structure to writing essays and stories. The book’s gradual, step-by-step approach makes the mastery of English a truly painless process for students whose first language is other than English.

Book#2:Teaching English Language Learners: Across the Content Areas by Judie Haynes

English language learners (ELLs) often face the difficult challenge of learning both a new language and new subject matter at the same time.

In Teaching English Language Learners Across the Content Areas, Judie Haynes and Debbie Zacarian offer strategies, tools, and tips that teachers can use to help ELLs at all levels flourish in mainstream classrooms.

This book will show teachers how to

* Determine their ELLs’ stages of English language acquisition.
* Modify assignments and assessments in different content areas for ELLs at different stages of language development.
* Ensure that all ELLs participate fully in lesson activities alongside their English-fluent peers.
* Communicate effectively with parents and guardians of students from diverse cultures.

Real-life examples of lessons from elementary, middle, and high school that have been modified for ELLs in language arts, math, science, and social studies classes show how to effectively put the authors’ recommendations into practice. A glossary of important ELL and ESL terms is included as well, for those who are new to teaching ELLs.

Whether novice or veteran, all teachers of ELLs will benefit from this wonderfully practical guide to ensuring that ELLs learn English by learning content and learn content while learning English.

Book#4: Many Languages, One Classroom: Teaching Dual and English Language Learners

Open the door to literacy and learning for young dual language learners.

In classrooms across the country, teachers are encountering more children who are learning English and who come from diverse language backgrounds. As challenging as this may be, a preschool teacher’s goal remains the same: to welcome all children and give them the best possible start in education and in life.

Even the most experienced teacher can feel a bit unsure about meeting the unique needs of children from different language backgrounds. Many Languages, One Classroom applies the latest information about best practices to all aspects of a preschool program. From using lists of key words and visual aids to using body language and gestures, the strategies you will find in this book are adaptable and easy to put into practice. Designed to fit any preschool curriculum, Many Languages, One Classroom addresses state standards and benchmarks of standard quality programming.

Organized by interest areas and times of the day, you’ll find everything you need to open the doors of literacy and learning for English language learners during dramatic play, outdoor play, reading, science, blocks, and circle time.

  1. good job TARUN and his team. I appreciate the list of books you have added in elt weekly issue# 93, its a real help..keep doing things like this.

  2. It is a very interesting idea to show some ELT-related materials for sale. It really encoursges many to benefit from the list available. However, the list could’ve been a little longer to widen the chances for selection.
    Thanks
